HIVES!!!!

Saturday, we came to the realization that Aidan is allergic to penicillin, just like his mommy. Aidan has been on some amoxicillin for an ear infection and was towards the end of the 10 days. All of a sudden, Saturday afternoon while we were in Beaumont visiting with family, he started to break out with some hives. My immediate thought was "uh-oh". When I was younger, I was pretty sensitive to things and when I would get in contact with penicillin, fragrances in laundry detergent, paba in sunscreen, etc. I would break out with hives - bad. I was pretty confident and relieved that Aidan had not shown any signs of this sensitivity being passed down, that is until this weekend.

He was starting to get uncomfortable by the trip back home, which ended up in the miserable territory by the middle of the night. After a call into the nurse line at 3 am to see what we could give him besides Hydrocortozone cream, we went and purchased some Benadryl. Benadryl used to automatically start helping for me, but it didn't seem to have that same effect with Aidan. We were all up until about 5 and then off and on until about 8. He was miserable and the hives were getting worse, they spread when you scratch. So we got hold of the on-call doctor, who told us to stop the antibiotic and make an appointment first thing Monday morning. Well, by Sunday evening, his hives started to change, which really unnerved me. They became these huge patches of red raised up skin. What was strange was the the center of them started to look purple. Basically his entire little body looked like it had been completely beaten up! I am uploading some pictures from Sunday morning to give you an idea. I failed to take any pictures when it changed, spread even more and turned into those bruises, but I will let you use your imagination.

We took him to the doctor monday morning and was told to give him Zyrtec as well. It will take perhaps up to 10 days for it to completely clear. He is not contagious and it is not effecting anything internally. He is just itching all over (very similar to chicken pox) and his hands and feet have swelled, thus making is uncomfortable to walk. Poor little man! I have noticed that today it is starting to go away on his chest and is fading in color everywhere else. He also is starting to act like they are not bothering him as much. I would certainly hope so with both Zyrtec and Bendadryl in his system!
